PRE SEASON

This competition was generally a group based round robin competition, although a few seasons was a straight knock out for the loser. It had been in existence since 1962 and the match against Cronulla at Redfern Oval on 24 February in the 1967 competition is considered the club's first ever competitive match as a newly promoted first division team. The Panthers rather sensationally won the title in their second season in 1968, defeating Newtown in the final, on the back of a dominant first half display. However, Penrith would only advance past the group stage once more (in 1969) before the competition was axed for the 1982 season. It returned in 1990, with Penrith qualifying for the final in both 1990 and 1991, only to lose to Canberra and Brisbane respectively. The second incarnation had a larger regional focus, with a large number of matches played outside of Sydney. It was once again axed for the 1996 season, and has not returned since. The seasons in between these competitions (1982 to 1989 and 1996 to date) have generally involved trials in the absence of this competition, although there have been other pre-season tournaments since 1996, such as the World Sevens and Auckland Nines.
